Before the pool day, start with the right fit

An open pool can make anyone uneasy — especially with a dog who is excited, anxious, or simply new to water. A life vest doesn't remove that concern, but the right size, a calm introduction, and your attention nearby change how the whole day feels.

Fit is where it starts. A vest that is too loose can shift; one that is too tight is uncomfortable to wear. Breed alone won't tell you the answer, so we ask you to measure — two dogs of the same breed often need different sizes.

Back length — From the base of the neck to the base of the tail, with your dog standing.
Chest girth — The widest point behind the front legs, tape snug but not tight.
Neck girth — Around the base of the neck where a collar sits.
Weight — A current weight, not an estimate from last season.

How to put the PetVest® on

The routine below follows the guidance supplied with the vest. If anything on the printed instructions differs from what you read here, follow the printed instructions.

Prepare

Work on dry ground away from the water, with treats nearby and your measurements to hand.

Open the fasteners

Undo every strap and fastener fully before the vest goes near your dog.

Orient the vest

Flap at the front, fin running along the back, straps hanging free underneath.

Place it on

Lower it onto your dog's back rather than pulling it over the head, and let them settle.

Fasten and adjust

Close the chest and belly straps, then tighten evenly until the vest sits level.

Comfort check

Two flat fingers under each strap. Walk a few steps together and watch for rubbing or hesitation.

Re-check at the water

Dogs shake and move — confirm every fastener and the neck opening again before entering.

Remove safely

Bring your dog fully out of the water, undo the fasteners, then lift the vest away.

Where to check the fit, point by point

Every point is written out in full — nothing here depends on hovering.

Neck opening

Slide the vest on so the neck opening sits where a collar would. You should be able to slip two fingers between the opening and your dog's neck — no pressure on the throat, no loose gap.

Chest and belly straps

Fasten the straps under the chest and belly, then adjust until the vest sits level. Two flat fingers should fit under each strap. Re-check after your dog shakes or walks a few steps.

Fasteners

Close every fastener the vest has before your dog goes near water, and look at each one to confirm it is seated properly. Anything left open changes how the vest sits.

Front support flap

The padded flap at the front gives your dog a surface to rest their head against in the water. It should lie flat, not bunched under the chin or pushed up against the ears.

Top grab handle

The handle on the back is for lifting and guiding your dog while you are right beside them. Support the body with your other hand, and never use the handle to hold a dog suspended.

Shark-fin detail

The fin sits along the top of the vest. It is a decorative detail — nothing to adjust, and nothing to hold on to. Check it isn't caught under a strap when you fasten the vest.

Stop using the vest if it shifts out of place, restricts breathing or movement, rubs, or if your dog shows visible distress. Re-measure and reassess the size before trying again.

Dogs respond to water differently. Some wade straight in; others need several short, unhurried sessions before they're comfortable. Both are normal.

What if my dog is between sizes?

Re-measure to be sure, then size up. A vest with a little adjustment range left is easier to fit than one at its limit.

Can it help support my dog in the water?

It is a buoyancy aid for supervised use, worn with you within immediate reach. How any individual dog floats and moves in it depends on their body, the fit, and the water — so treat it as support, never as a substitute for your attention.

Is human supervision required?

Open the fasteners, place the vest with the flap at the front and the fin along the back, then fasten and adjust the straps and check the fit before going near water. To remove, bring your dog fully out of the water, undo the fasteners, and lift it away without pulling over the head.

How should it be cleaned and dried?
